How Porcelain Veneers Are Placed: A Visit-by-Visit Walkthrough

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain coverings bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Placement is typically completed across three to four visits over two to four weeks. Here is what to expect at each one.

Visit 1: Consultation and Smile Design

The first visit is a consultation and exam. Photos and X-rays are taken, the teeth and gums are evaluated, and goals are discussed. If veneers are the right tool, a digital scan or impression is taken and sent to a dental lab. A wax-up — a physical model of the proposed result — is often produced at this stage.

For larger cases, a trial smile is offered: temporary composite is shaped onto the existing teeth so the patient can see and approve the design before any tooth structure is altered.

Visit 2: Tooth Preparation

At the preparation visit, the teeth receiving veneers are gently reshaped. Approximately 0.5 mm of enamel is removed from the front surface to make room for the porcelain. Local anesthetic is used for comfort.

Final impressions or digital scans are taken and sent to the lab. Shade selection is made at this visit —choosing the porcelain color that will look natural with the rest of the smile.

Temporary veneers are placed and worn for two to three weeks while the permanent veneers are fabricated.

Visit 3: Placement of Final Veneers

At the placement visit, the temporaries are removed and the final porcelain veneers are tried in to verify fit, color, and shape. Once approved, each veneer is bonded permanently to the tooth using dental cement and a curing light. Edges are polished and bite is adjusted.

Visit 4 (Optional): Follow-Up Check

A brief follow-up one to two weeks after placement confirms the bite is comfortable and the gums are healthy. Most patients do not need any further adjustment.

What to Expect During Recovery

•    Mild sensitivity to cold for one to two weeks

•    Brief adjustment period for the bite — usually a day or two

•    A faint, temporary lisp in some patients as the tongue adjusts to the new tooth shape

•    No significant downtime — normal activities the same day
